Ricky Thornton Jr grabbed the lead from polesitter Hudson O'Neal on lap 12 then held on late to win the opening night at Eagle Raceway in Nebraska. Jonathan Davenport and Kyle Bronson would round out the Lucas Oil podium.
37 Lucas Oil Late Models were on hand last night with Garrett Alberson laying down the fastest lap during qualifying. Group A fast qualifier Hudson O'Neal took the heat race win to grab the inside pole for the feature. Other winners were Dylan Thornton, Alberson, and Nothdurft.
Dylan Thornton is the driver who was recently announced to be behind the wheel of Cody Sommer's DRT car at the upcoming Dream. The California native has been moving up the ranks from stock cars to IMCA Modifieds to Super Late Models.
Hudson O'Neal , who won last year at Eagle , would lead the first 11 laps until Thornton Jr took control. It was anything but smooth sailing for RTJ as he battled the rising cushion and challenges from Davenport.
Twice JD was working on the leader only to have the yellow flag ruin his advances and a chance for victory lane. Thornton admitted in victory lane that he slammed the cushion so hard unexpectedly the wheel was knocked out his hands. His right rear was plugged with mud causing a nasty vibration but held on for the win.
They will do it all over again tonight at Eagle paying another $10,000 to win before Saturday's big $50,000 payday.
